I have a feeling he will return because of how the season has gone. If they would have made the playoffs I believe he would have left but I can see him wanting to turn the team around next year before he walks away. Too much pride to just leave on a bad note and he recognizes there is still a lot of talent on that team, too many distractions this year to go with the dreaded Super Bowl hangover.

Well from what I hear around the Steelers water cooler, Yes he will be back. He won't leave with the way things have gone this season. He wants to go out on a winning note (even if we don't get back to the SB) Cowher will stay with the Steelers. He is NOT going to take a huge pay cut to coach for NC. I think he will be with the Steelers a few more years at least.
GO STEELERS!!!!!

sadly no he will not return, cowher led the steelers to a super bowl victory last year and probably asked for more money because of it, and as always the steelers will not pay if they don't have to. Likely cowher will take a year or two off, not coach at the college level cuz that's a pay cut, and then take a job in the nfl once the moneys right.

No. He has already bought a property elsewhere. I think he feels he has missed enough time with his family already. He has achieved his ambition of winning the Superbowl also. He is getting out just in time the Steelers have peaked and are now on the way down.
