Being frank and honest is good for intellectuals as long as you are speaking words that are:
-Truthful
-Pleasing
-Beneficial and
-Not agitating to others.
If you just speak anything and everything and upset those around you (benefitting no one in the process) then you need to get control over your speech.
Think about these 4 quality standards BEFORE you say something and check to see if what you are about to produce meets the standard. Practice makes perfect.
If you want to become a better face reader, then you need to slow down and focus on the person, make eye contact, try to understand their ideas, feelings and so on. If you are not sure then ask them. Then you can correlate the face with the feeling/thought/etc. It also helps to understand a person's karmic profile (astrological).
Try meditation, yoga, deep relaxation, and various other types of austerities that sharpen your intellect, intuition, empathy, and so on.
It takes time and comes with experience. Get more connected with yourself and God, and then you will esaily connect with others.
Hope this helps!

Being frank and open doesn’t mean that you don’t have the ability to judge people. Yes, you should give a thought about how much information (personal/business) you want to disclose to others, esp. strangers and people with whom you have not interacted much. In the past you must have realized discussing everything under the sun with every one have created some unpleasant experience for you. In short you can be extrovert but you must be careful while discussing /asking sensitive questions/issues e.g. Lot of people don’t like if you ask them too many personal questions/discussing abt religion belief etc. Be open to criticism (be it positive and negative). Do a SWOT analysis if required….I must tell you, this initiative which you have taken itself shows that your a good human being..............Good Luck Dear….

Read up on a condition called Asperger's Syndrome.
My husband and son both have this. They are both very intelligent and cannot pick up on non-verbal cues.
http://www.aspergers.com/aspcrit.htm You can have varying degrees of this syndrome. They both have very focused interrests... like my husband cannot stop collecting and solving 3 dimensional puzzles like Rubik's type, and he can tell you anything you ever wanted to know about religions present and dead. If you don't feel this fits you... There are psychologists who help with this type of thing. My son sees one because he thinks everyone is good, and he doesn't pick up on the suttle cues other children give. Good Luck.

You don't put as much weight in what people are saying as you do on what you think and the urge to offer your opinion.
Listen more.
