I just got a black ghost knife, and in the tank he was put into there is a large fake tree root type decoration (and I mean large). It has a bunch of holes and is completely hollow, but when I was cleaning it I noticed that inside it's sort of rough and bumpy, not a very good place for fish to be. Well, being an electric fish he had to feel his way around as he explored his new home, and pretty quickly he slipped into the hollow tree roots and vanished. I tried looking in there with a flashlight, but saw nothing.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do you think since he can't see, he'll get lost or something and die? I'm worried about it, since I know they can't see too well so he wouldn't be able to see the light outside of the log. Would his electric sensory system allow him to navigate out of there?

I don't think it's even been an hour since he's been in there.

Black Ghost Knifes (BGK) love to hide in hollow tubes during the daytime. They will go into the darkest, snuggest tube they can find.

Trust your BGK to know his own limits; he's just comfortably tucked in, he won't get lost or die. He will be able to navigate out of there no problem at all. Let him be, he should be fine. Turn off the lights and wait for him to come out.

If you want him to be more easy to locate, burry the root system so he can't access the holes (when he's OUT of the ornament, of course!), and put some black PVC tubing in there, instead, and he'll go in there instead. You can go with clear PVC, but I think they prefer black.

you may't cycle an aquarium in seventy 2 hrs. How did you cycle it? How great is the aquarium. those fish get truly great and choose a range of of area. purely filling an aquarium and placing out the nice and cozy temperature and filtration would not cycle the tank. you should both have fish in it (inventory heavily with fish that are hardy and can want to manage a range of of differences) or do a fishless cycle with the aid of including some type of stay ammonia. My wager is this tank is purely no longer cycled. If the ammonia is already turning out to be because the try confirmed, it is going to proceed to upward thrust till the tank totally cycles. Do an internet seek for on the thanks to cycle a tank and do not upload any extra fish till you bypass through this procedure.

Clown knives or Ghost fish, typically stay hidden and come out at or when the lites go out and does some of the most amazing acrobatics you can imagine. They are extremely agile and have no problems getting in and out of things.

i wouldn't worry too much about him becoming lost or dying, ghost knives in particular are extremely secretive animals. Hiding is relay their only defense mechanism, and they will use your tank's decor to their complete advantage. I don't re cal the name of the manufacturer, but i work at pet supplies plus, and we actually carry a clear hiding tube especially for ghost knives. That way, you can enjoy them , and they can enjoy their security :)
