Psychoanalysis cannot be empirically tested and therefore, not proven. It also takes a really long time and people don't necessarily get better. With the direction of medical care today, psychoanalysis is a waste of time and money.

Psychoanalysis is but one way of treatment that is followed by fewer psychiatrists today for the usual reason that it is a much longer, more involved, way to approach patent's problems. Doctors make the case that they can see more patients in the same amount of time with other treatment methods, thus multiplying their effectiveness. The couch is a lengthy, expensive treatment and the analysts can see only maybe 10 or 15 patients for the whole year. And with psychotropic and other drugs, a 15 to 20 minute session every week to three months is enough to monitor a patient and deal with crisises or side issues that arise. I've been treated this way for over 20 years and can attest to its viability and cost effectiveness. I've never visited a "shrink," per se.

well, psychoanalysis has many, many flaws. but i think the main reason that they disagree with is that psychoanalysis can be very long, it usually takes years and its not always effective. meanwhile, psychiatrists give you a pill and the next thing you know, u feel happy....but watch out, I'm not sure that psychoanalysis is the most efficient psychotherapy but at least it tries to go to the bottom of things, to really solve them and not just a quick and easy answer....
