Do the Yankee and Red Sox players really hate each other or is it just the fans?

Hate is such a harsh word I would call it jealously, since the Yankees are such a dynasty and have had the Bosox number for about 100 years, the fans of Boston are just jealous, that one year 04 they got a tiny bit of satisfaction, but it will never add up to all the years the Pinstripes have been the better team.Boston fans are just crybabies in my opinion, this coming from a Cardinal fan

It depends on who you are dealing with. Bostonians are very proud of history and their sport teams. New Yorkers are proud that they live in what they believe is the greatest city in the world. Boston had a dominant team through the early part of the 20th century. Then their owner Frazee wanted to finance a musical so he sold Babe Ruth (a star pitcher and promising batter) to the Yankees for a large sum of money and a large loan. Since then (1919), the Yankees have won 26 WS and until 2004 Boston hadn't won any. 86 years is a long time to look over at your smug successful neighbor when you live and die by pride. My husband is a big Yankees' fan and our son, who was 3 at the time, decided just before the 2004 playoffs that he was a Red Sox fan and their constantly teasing each other about who's better. It's a badge of honour for most true fans to commit to their teams, but if they didn't have someone as a foil to brag in front of, it just wouldn't be any fun.

I don't think it's hate. I think its a true rivalry in where everything they do you want to do better. It probably started between the two cities when Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees. From that point there was a bitterness between the two teams and it's carried over to today. If you ask a Red Sox fan why he hates the Yankees he'd probably say because it's NY and vice verse.

I don't know about the players, but as a fan of the Red Sox, I can say that I was actually raised to hate the Yankees. Saying good things about them in my father's presence is forbidden. Silly, I know, but it's part of the heritage of being born an Irish-Catholic girl from Boston.

It is just the fans for the most part. They may "hate them" only in a competitive way but most athletes have a lot of respect for each other. I have no doubt that fans of the Yankees "hate" (such a negative word!) the Red Sox and vise versa, it is really just passion for their own team. It makes for great conversation and you have to admire fans that love their own team that much and there is little doubt about the passion of NY or Boston fans (or other cities fans, even the bad teams). That is part of what makes sports so much fun as long as those fans dont "cross the line" .

It's mostly the fans now. The players change teams so frequently now that it's tough to build up loyalty for your club. I miss the old days of guys like Carlton Fisk and Bill Lee and Craig Nettles and Thurman Munson. Those guys truly disliked each other and they played every game between the Sox and the Yanks like it was the 7th game of the World Series.

No, it's a rivalry. If we really hated each other, there would be riots, beatings, murders at every Yanks/Sox game. It's a pride thing that is amplified by the fact that the Yankees are far, far better than the Red Sux.

I don't think it's hate, at least for me.I think it's just a great rivalry and now that the curse has ended, the rivalry exists but not like before. When these two teams play it's always a circus like atmosphere
