Cheap and nice are mutually exclusive terms in NYC.
You can forget about nice so here is some advice....

1)Whatever the monthly rent is, multiply it by 48..... that is your yearly income you need to rent.
2)Have 2-3 months worth of paystubs.
3)Of course try to get your apartment near a trainstation. That will keep you from getting a car where the average yearly insurance for a basic car is like 3k.
4)In your situation, get a guarantor to help co-sign, like your parents. That could help you in getting an apartment.

I would suggest Astoria, Queens. The area is decent and fairly safe. A studio can be had for about $800 a month. 1BRMS go for about $1100 in queens. You can pretty much forget Manhattan.
Anyways, I apologize if I sound a little harsh. I do wish you good luck in your search.

If you want it cheap you are not going to get a nice apartment in a good neighborhood. You're best bet is to find a middle level apartment and get room mates.
