Well, being a 7th grader at a college prep. school, i would say to give the child encouragement. Make it fun! Who wants to stare at a book all day? Maybe make a visual concept of whatever you are talking about. Also, give the child rewards!

I just do my work anways....I acually like school most of the time

I'm a 3rd grade teacher and have parents ask me that a lot. First of all, you're the parent! First, you should be responsible for providing your kids with a quiet, clean work area with all the supplies they need (stops distractions and excuses). Then, work out a plan with the teacher where your kid writes down all the homework assignments in a notebook. Check this every night and sign it. Have the teacher check at the end of every day for all the assignments to be listed and in the morning for your signature.

Next, take away and give privileges according to homework completion. For example, no playing/tv/video games until all homework is done. Big rewards are good too. Maybe bring them to their favorite restaurant, minigolfing, etc. for a quarter where all homework is turned in.

The thing that I've noticed the most (and this is for elementary aged kids) is that the students who don't turn in homework come from disorganized families where rules are not enforced regularly. Make sure that you are consistant with rules.

Finally, there are always exceptions. ADD and learning disabilities cause some of my students to get frustrated. Tutoring and talking with the teacher to make modifications with the homework (extra time, help, etc.). Also, I've also taught middle school and high school and with that age sometimes they're just stubborn or too cool for school. Make sure to really lay down the law with that age group or it will only get worse.

Give them the undesirable choice of work, and the only thing that gets you out of some of the work is doing school work...

simple fact in life... you will either use your brain or you muscle to do work and perhaps both... so if you cannot learn to use your brain the wash these dishes, clean this room, vacuum this floor, etc etc. etc....

Which would you choose. Isn't that the choice you have. You either learn to do it yourself or you will pay others to do it for you.... So if they don't want to learn their school lessons... then teach them to survive in this world some other way. Only try to make your preference for the choice they will desire most.

If I had a choice between splitting wood for the fire for hours outside in the cold with a dull ax, or doing Algebra indoors where it is warm. I think I'll become a math teacher....and guess what? That is exactly what happened.

What I do with my kids is I will either, use something that they really like ie. Playstation or something else and not allow it untill all the work is complete. Other times I sit with my son and I do my own homework or I work on a project at my desk while he does his work. That way he feels like he is still part of the action in the house and he is not missing out on anything.

well when I come home I do my home work first thing. then take care of the pet, and then play with my friends.

my mom told me that it was very important for me to finish my home work and to obviously get through school by finishing all my classwork and homework.

my older brother was so concerned about me doing homework (even if I knew exactly how to do everything in it) he wouldn't let me use my little home work passes my second grade teacher gave me.
