Rap is usually just a basic beat with lots of hardcore lyrics, usually dealing with first hand experiences in the ghetto with drugs, violence, etc.
Hip-hop is more common among suburban teenagers, even ones who claim to be ghetto are usually listening to hip-hop, not rap. Ciara, Ludacris, Kelis, T.I. to name a few. This music is traditionally danced to, whereas rap music tells a story; the beat isn't as souped-up.
