If a scene requires them to carry on a conversation while eating, one trick I've heard is that they use food that can be swallowed quickly - for example, bananas are popular for this.

For the main part they do. But between takes they usually spit out the food so they dont get full or drunk. Also for cooking shows and such its always prepaired in advanced if you havn't guessed that already. And food thats supposed to be edible but is quite digusting they usually make a mock food that tastes good but looks like somthing else

I would say when they actually eat the food, it is real. There is alot of fake food also, that they don't touch, to make the setting look better. So both!

The alcoholic beverages used usually consist of water and then food coloring to make them look real. they might also contain other juices but never any alcohol.
