Well you will need an automatic steering column and skip the 4spd and get a 700r4 automatic (it has overdrive) out of an early model 90's truck and there is a module you can put on the tranny to make it shift into OD (computer controls the OD shift) I have a "69" Fleetside and my gas milage went up .I just took the clutch pedal off its easy to do. And never regretted it. Now if you already are set on the 4 spd All ya got to do is knockout the hollow round pin on the column shifter that holds it on and cut a hole in the floor board once the tranny is in to fit a Hurst shifter though it and get a boot cover big enough to cover the hole you cut and a plate to bolt down too Bellhousing is the same for 3 spd or 4 spd ,smallblock or bigblock. A muncie 254 is better for a truck (that is the gear ratio for 1st gear and they can be changed out for a few bucks) as this will give you the ability to pull out towing or hauling a load. Disconnect the linkage and go with Hurst on that too(from under the hood connected to the steering column) Check the drive shaft as you may need to have it modified(either lenghtened or shortened and rebalanced)

i own a repair shop, and you,ll need another steering column, and a good 4 speed, and a good floor shifter for it,,the rest of it is the same, and you don't need the steering column right away,,you can just remove the shifter part of it from the column for now and that will work fine ,,i have did a few of these and there not bad to do a few hours and your done with it,make sure your drive shaft is the same length, the splines at the rear are the same on the 3 and 4 speeds,so you should be OK there,,other than that make sure the mounts are the same the rest i think you know,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s

You will not have to change the bell housing. You will need a trans and shifter and maybe a yoke for the drive shaft.Depending on the trans, maybe a shorter or longer drive shaft. from the bell forward is all the same[clutch, throw out bearing etc. There are some 4 spds. with fine tooth input shaft but are rare and very pricey. You don't have to do anything to the column because you will need a floor shifter. Remove the shifter linkage from steering column and if you want to the shift lever.

You will need a 4 speed trans and a floor shifter.
Depending on the 4 speed you get, you may need a different length driveshaft or a different yoke.
Take off the old shifter linkage and handle, or if you want it to look factory, swap out the column for one that had a factory 4 speed.

the transmission and bell housing, a new shifter, a new clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing for the four speed, and the proper clutch linkage if what you have doesnt work..... just remove the shifting levers from the sterring column but check where your reverse light switch is at because you will have to rework it so it will work with the four speed, this is of course if you want reverse lights

Are you planning on keep the shifter on the column. If not, you just have to get the correct bellhousing to mate to the engine and tranny, cut a hole in the tranny tunnel for the shifter, and your in business.
