Padre means Father in Spanish, both referring to a Catholic priest. A friar is a brother or monk, meaning a person who has joined a monastic order. All that aside, the San Diego Padres also refer to themselves as the Friars. The post game radio show on 1090 in San Diego is the Friar Hour. It doesn't have to be religiously correct, it's just baseball.
