She'd probably be so upset that they didn't fit you and horrified that you didn't dare tell her. Some items might be able to be shrunk by boiling or putting in a hotter wash - I've also found that the tumble dryer can do this..........by accident.

I agree with KJ, don't try and shrink them, if they are made from synthetic fabrics they won't shrink from heat. All you end up doing is ruining a bunch of new clothes and the colors will fade from the hot water. Your friend has been generous so just express your appreciation and ask where they were purchased as you'd like to get the same thing but in the correct size. It's tough to buy clothes for someone else without them being with you to try them on so your friend should understand.

Rather than shrinking them, you can bring them to a taylor to be fitted to you. But if you want to shrink clothes, wash and rinse them in hot water and dry in the clothes dryer on the highest heat setting and that should do it.

If they are cotton, try washing them in very hot water and then running them in the dryer for a looooong time. Of course, the drawback to this is that you will then have to iron the living daylights out of the clothes to get the wrinkles out. Good luck!

Find out where they were bought from, take them back and exchange them for the same item in the right size. Don't try to shrink them. If you don't know where they came from, ask. You don't have to say, "These don't fit and I was wondering where you got them so I can take them back." But say something like, "I really like this style. Where did you get it?"

If its cotton, wash it in really hot water, then dry it in really hot air. Synthetic fibers like polyester, will generally not shrink much. Another option, if you have cash, is to search the Internet for the same garment, then purchase the correct size and overnight ship it to yourself.

You shouldn't hide such petty things from a friend, you start and you'll keep on going, let her know and ask to go together to exchange them, but if you really, really, really need to shrink them, hot water and a hot dryer.
