Here is a link to a 350 on E-bay, I'm only posting the link so you can see the pictures. If you scroll into the description area you will see a picture of the engine painted blue. (Oddly enough it is painted Ford Blue--Go figure) looking at the front you will see a silver cover--under this is the timing chain. If you look at the second picture down you will see the engine with the cover removed and timing chain exposed. Not eht holes at the upper corners of the timing chain--This is where the water pump bolts onto. If you are wondering the engine in the background of the second is a 4.6/5.4 SOHC Ford motor.

You are in the ballpark as to the location. However, you will need to pull the harmonic balancer off with a harmonic balancer puller. You can rent one from a lot of auto parts store and they will advise you as to how to use it .Both the cam gear and the crank gear ( looks like a bicycle sprocket) arrows line up when reinstalling it and there is a small half moon shaped piece of metal called a keyway on the crank that you have to put back on the shaft to hold the H.B in place. When reinstalling the HB all you have to do is use a flat board to pound it back in place using a rubber mallot. I recommend you replace with a steel double chain an gear set up as it will outlast the nylon ones and never stretch or need replacing again

Yes. You remove the fan, waterpump and vibration damper to access the timing cover. Line up your timing marks on the damper and remove the distributor cap and make note of the rotor position before disassembly. When you put everything back together and everything is properly lined up you shouldn't have any trouble starting the engine . Then you can make any final adjustments after its running.

This someone is right. You have to remove the fan, water pump. harmonic balancer and cover on the block. you will have to loosen pan bolts to drop front of pan down or you will never get the timing chain cover back on. Replace seal in front cover and gasket. Look at noise of harmonic balancer, if there is a grove in it, you can get a repair sleeve for it. Put balancer in freezer and let it chille while doing other work. Turn engine untill timing marks are in line on chain sprockets and timing mark is on zero or top dead center. Now remove and replace cam sprocket and chain. Now take repair sleeve and put it on a hot plate or burner of electric stove and heat it. Remove balancer from greezer and drop repair sleeve on to noise, a light taping may be required with block of wood and hammer. Make sure every thing is clean. I always use Permatex 2 sealer for this job on all gaskets. once you have cover back on and pan bolts tightened, clean threads on water pump bolts and coat with sealer. Now install harmonic balancer. put light coating of oil on seal in front cover and on crank noise, aline key ways and give balancer a few light taps with a hammer, I said easy, don't bang hell out of it. you just wont to get it started on the shaft now put bolt back it and tighten it with impact wrench or with a breaker bar and socket. you may have to hold blancer with a strap wrench, tighten bolt to 100 pound feet of torque. I hope you remembered to put timing marks on sproket together . Install fan and hoses, fill with coolant and you all done.

the mechanic knows best.
remember to keep the parts clean, very clean.
then oil the new chain with clean oil, so when you start the engine it has enough oil on it until the pump can pressurize the system.

One key point..use the proper puller on the harmonic balancer.
DO NOT use a standard three jaw puller on the outside diameter.
You will pull the thing in two. Then it will be useless.
