Although a degree in journalism would help, it's not essential to becoming a journalist.

Traits good journalists have include: curiosity, the ability to do research on your own, the ability to take complex problems and explain them in a way people understand, the ability to write clearly and properly, an ability to adapt to different environments, skepticism, and a thirst for knowledge of all things (the law, politics, sciences, sports).

You need a four-year college degree in journalism. Make sure you work at the college TV station (and pick a college that has one). After that, it is paying your dues. You start at a small-market station and work your way up.

For a major market it also is about your looks. You need to be above average in that area.
