Yes, there are a lot that children today see and hear. A lot of today's kids also have no manners and are rude. Not all, some. I make it a point to thank a small or big kid for being polite!
We as grownups have to help our kids deal with these issues.

Perphaps you heard of the cold war. From the 50s through the 70's there was constant fear of nukes falling on our heads, vietnam, the draft, terrorism, fbi spying on us, cia feeding us lsd, middle eastern wars, famines, etc, etc.
The 30s and 40s brought us world wide depression and war.
Today is no different and the youth of today deals with the same issues that youth has always had to deal with. Todays youth have nothing special to deal with.

I have said many times I would hate to be a kid in todays world. The future holds many more difficulties in day to day life for our children to face. When I was younger finishing school was important but not like it is today. If kids don't have year 12 and further studies it is almost impossible to get a job. They are expected to know what they want to spend the rest of their lives doing before they hit 13 and it is difficult to change that if they change their minds. There is Aids and HIV to be concerned about on top of all the other things like peer pressure to look "right" and having the perfect body. Give me the wild sixties to grow up in any day!

Not much different from when I was a child. War in vietnam, riots and protests. Or when my father was a child. These things have been occuring since the dawn of man. Thanks to CNN we get to see it 24 hours a day. Watch what they see on TV. Careful what you say around them and answer any questions to explain what they do see. Its the unknown that scares them the most. Point out that not everything they hear or see is real. That many people spout opinions as fact and opinions can be wrong, very wrong. It is a very scary world, my son is 11 and still very innocent. I have not sheltered him but have explained a great many things to him, knowledge is power. It is power to overcome fear.

Yes the youth of today is bombarded with too much, being forced to face serious aspects of life too early, and having to grow up under pressure.

I tend to look at today's youth as being more on the supply side of the problems in the world today.

I would say yes.....we are making the world's problems seem insurmountable. If we would but just work together for the betterment of mankind regardless of any differences and treat each other as we would want to be treated (even through the differences of cultures, etc.), our problems would be few.
