Depends on the woman I think.
I breastfed my baby, but when i first started...day four I got severely engorged and ended up with a breast infection because of the blocked ducts. I was new to this, and didn't have a pump at the time...but things worked out.
I weaned my baby off the breast and onto a bottle(i went back to work), but slowly I stopped feeding him and the milk just stopped coming.
Chances are you are going to have your milk come in. If you choose then to not breastfeed, I think they may have medication that will help dry it up.
You may have pain for a week.

If you have chosen to stop breastfeeding or are not breastfeed from the beginning... Wear a tight bra (a sports bra is great)... Take antihistimine milk is produced by the same type of process that mucus is produced an antihistimine will inhibit the production... If you have pain try a warm shower to relieve the engorgement then cold... Cloth bags of rice kept in the freezer work wonderfully... You should feel less pain and engorgement after 3-5 days...

For hot packs you can microwave the cloth bags of rice.. Only use regular rice not minute rice...

I breastfed my son for 3 weeks and did not have any problems with my milk drying up but it was because I gradually weaned him off the breast (I had some complications but I was able to gradually wean him off in about 3 days). I do remember when my milk fist came in (5 days after my son's brith) and it was terrible.. my breast were huge and hard as rocks! I pumped to relieve the pressure but of course I was breastfeeding at the time also. I would try to cabbage leaves(I've heard of this) and take tylenol for the pain. Just be careful and watch for infection. I encourage you to try b'feeding though. Although it didn't work for me this time I will definately give it another try with my 2nd! Oh and they no longer give you med's to dry your milk up. Good luck!

Oh, gosh! My boobs hurt for like a week and I WAS breastfeeding! Engorgement SUCKS!!!! What ever you do, DONT pump! The more you pump the more youll produce and that is NOT what you want if ur not breast feeding. What I would do is...get in the shower and let the milk leak...whatever leaks out will not be reproduced, but what ever you pump or self express will come back.

how you may stop breastfeeding is to do it progressively, about one feeding per week. in case you stopped suddenly, you've engorgement and discomfort. you may take anti inflammatory medicine like Advil or Motrin and follow chilly compresses to assist with the discomfort, even if the suited element to do might want to be to precise or pump adequate milk to make your self extra comfortable. If both breast will change into purple or warm to the contact, or in case you improve chills or a fever over 100F, those are warning signs of mastitis and also you should contact your regular practitioner proper now.

Plan on about 2 weeks!! Possibly the worst thing next to the pain is the fact that you will get soooooooo engorged that you will leak all over yourself. Cabbage leaves on you breasts help with that a bit and you will want to keep them VERY secure; any kind of bounce will hurt.

If you're breastfeeding, please don't stop. There are so many benefits for you. I almost quit at two weeks - I ran out to the store and bought a bottle and formula, but in the end, I couldn't bring myself to stop. I'm so, so, so glad I didn't stop.

There is a solution for 98% of all breastfeeding issues.

I actually tried to breastfeed after c-section, but developed post-preeeclampsia(toxicimia) within a week, so for all the drugs they were pumping into me I had no choice but to stop. anyways, to answer you, mine didn't really start hurting until about 11 days after her birth. And I'm talking it felt like I had some serious chunks of concrete in there! I used cabbage leaves(dead serious!)put them inside your bra cups for a couple days, but be ready, this will purge the milk so do at home if at all possible. Do not cook them and actually if you put the head of cabbage in the fridge or freezer until cool IT FEELS WONDERFUL!

You should breastfeed or pump to avoid engorgement. Also helps to put cold compresses on your breast.
