Understand the concept of After Life and thy shall become the knower of all!
Can we try to explain the concept of a flower without making one feel the smell of a flower? If I need to explain the concept of milk ... then I need to also explain the source from where the milk is derived ... how the cow is fed with the grass ... and for the grass to grow we need big fields ... and if these fields are not cultivated how do we expect to get good quality milk!
On the earthly plane, we visualize everything from the point of view of the senses. Anything beyond the concept of senses is not clearly understood. To be able to understand the entity of a human being ... we need to understand who created it and the purpose behind its creation. The human body is not a creation of the Mankind ... it is our Atman the soul within which has manifested the body ... in the cosmic life span of 8.4 million manifestations (a total cosmic journey of 96.4 million years) ... what is the value of a 70 to 80 years life span of a human being?
We need to understand the basics ... it is the Atman (our soul within) which is governing ... it has taken the body and not the vice versa. Our Atman the soul within needs a series of manifestations for it to liberate from the cycle of Birth and Death forever. The form of a human being is the last leg in the theory of evolution. Before the Atman soul has manifested a human body for the first time ... it has already passed through the various phases of evolution ... the body of an amoeba to start with, then an insect, a plant and finally being born as an animal.
How in the circumstances it is possible that we can even think of understanding the concept of the Cosmos in Hinduism or any Religion of the world unless we understand the underlying truth ... the truth of our Atman the soul within. It is only the ego of a human being that sometimes prevents us from assuming that there is a God. There are Human Beings who want to become immortal in this very life and that to in the physical manifested form. How can that be possible ... it is our Atman the soul within which get liberated from the cycle of Birth and Death ... it is our Atman the soul within which becomes free forever ... what is the significance of a human being except that it helps the Atman the soul within to expedite the journey.
The concept of a previous birth or the next birth is misunderstood. There is nothing of this nature that exists in the cosmic system. Had Human Beings possessed the power to be reborn ... if only it was the human being, which had manifested the Atman soul, only then this anomaly would have truthfully stood its ground. We are born and we die ... nothing is in our control ... the governing factor for every human being is the Karma ... the residual Karma from each birth manifested by an Atman the soul within which gets carried forwarded onto the next life through the chromosomes.
We Human Beings are really to be pitied upon ... we do not have the power even to create the smallest particle existing in the Cosmos ... yet, it is only as a human being that an Atman the soul within can get liberated ... in no other life form can one achieve Moksha Salvation ... the highest and the ultimate power available in the Cosmos is still with a human being ... the power to realize self and merge with the absolute consciousness. I believe that 'Lady~' is on track but not completly correct. At death each of us will return to a "Gulf Fixed" according to Luke 16:26 (KJV) where we shall remain until Christ returns, at Judgment. AFTER the Judgment we will be in Heaven or in Hell according to HIM. I hope that we are all studying and following what GOD had written in the New Testament. The DAY will come when some wished they had. Have a great Holiday!

If one believes in rebirth and also fate, then one is reborn (according to the good he has done in the present life) taking lesser senses or better life.
If one does not believe anything of the above, he quits this world thinking nothing willl happen after his death.
In either case, the important thing what we have done, when we were in this life. Even if nothing good has been done to others, atleast no harm has been done is the million dollar question. This is essential for both believer and non-believer.

If you are a believer in Christ and the Word of God, what is written in the Holy Bible states: once your spirit rises from the flesh it is instantly returned to the Father. God was the Creator of all souls, so all souls are returned to Him in Heaven. This is where you dwell, either in Paradise, or on the other side of the gulf...Here you wait until the Returning of Christ upon the earth(The Day of the Lord's Coming) and then be judged on Judgement Day.

I am completely irreligious, meaning I think that when we die, our bodies either decompose and are slowly eaten by worms, or get turned into black, black ash.
But I can't help but think of the Dream Theater song "The Spirit Carries On" :-)

My own personal philosiphy is that the universe is essentialy a creature in and of itself and that it has a mind and an awareness. (I also belive that all this is all completely within the realm of the scientific, not that it's relevant.) Uppon death the commonly asscribed dreamlike state is acheived where we see our lives through the eyes of this 'God' and that our afterlife is the inner universe our mind creates from the thoughts and feelings drawn up by this barrage.
Or maybe we just rot, man. I dunno.

I think it's basically like this.
Spiritually, If you believe in God and follow his rules, you go to Heaven.
If you don't, you go to the other place.
If you're somewhere in between, you spend some time in purgatory then go to heaven.
Psychically,
Your body just slowly decays until there's nothing left but ashes.

Well.... for me, my life ends. PERIOD. Since I do not subscribe to any religeon, that is the end of my need to hold on to my body. I have it in my will to donate every usable parts to whom ever can benefit from them, and what's left goes to science. Basically, I turn into spare parts.
