RSS is a web feed format used to publish content such as blogs, news feeds, subscriptions. For example, there can be an RSS feed on web news pertaining to Microsoft. I would subscribe to that RSS feed and would get notified when such an article would come up.

It is the latest craze in the past few years because of Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is all about people contributing and publishing content rather than a web site author generating it for their visitors.

On the more technical side, RSS is XML based. XML is a web markup language like HTML.

Really Simple Syndicate:

In a nutshell, it is a live feed from a blog or website which updates when the website or blog is updated. Basically people are starting to use "aggregators or RSS readers" to customise the information that is show to them. For instance I can use an aggregator and choose to get info about cars by going to a car blog and adding their RSS feed into my aggregator. This way anytime they add a post to their blog I will see it on my aggregator.

Example:
This is my blog:
http://www.plug-in-home-business.com/trafficblog/

This is my blog Feed:
http://www.plug-in-home-business.com/trafficblog/feed/

You will notice that the feed is written in XML code which might look real funny to the virgin eye. But to an aggregator this will transform into a regular text/html post.

Hope that helps

They're actually really neat things, especially if you have IE7 (in my opinion, of course there are a million other rss readers:)). You can try creating your own on http://mynotify.com/
