Go to Barnes & Noble and look through their sewing books. You will see how difficult jeans are to sew! But not impossible. My aunt recommends a Brother sewing machine and she sewed for 60 years (or so) until her eyesight gave out (she's 89). Most machines on the market are good.

She also used to go to the best department stores to see what the new styles looked like and looked at the seams to see how they were made.

One way to get a good pattern for jeans is to lay them on the floor one side and section at a time, and trace the pattern yourself, and then copy the stitching.

If you want a heavy duty sewing machine you should check out industrial machines. Usually small, independent sewing machine shops carry industrial and used machines in good condition. Patterns can be found at any sewing supply stores and most of the chain stores have different sales going on all the time. Start small and work your way up to bigger projects. Taking on more than you can handle is a sure way to frustrate yourself and make you quit.

I bought mine at a second hand store. I have had newer models of machines and they break down real fast. The older machines were built for the heavy duty work. I had mine now for over 5 years and still works like a charm. My old one is still sitting in my closet, I can't even get it fixed because they can't fix the memory in it's little built in computer.
