Yep.
Kevin Smith (the director), was working with a shoe-string budget to shoot the film. Black and white cameras and equipment were much cheaper back then, so it was much more convenient to use black and white.
Today, however, the film remains significant because of its black and white picture, strictly opposed in the colorful sequel Clerks II.
Hope this helps.

Yes, Clerks was shot in Black & White, on a budget of around $30,000.

That is a serious list of movies. Well... if you want thrilling indie-esque, then go for Donnie Darko or Battle Royale. Make you think: Crash or Blood Diamond. Made in Big for a Reason: Batman Begins or Casablanca Pretty Looking (with a good store too): Sin City. Load of Laughs: Robin Hood: Men in Tights or Scary Movie 3 (although that last one might just be me...)

Batman Begins - a new, great interpretation of the heroic series Casino Royale - Bond at his best! ("blond?", who cares?) Flyboys - fighter pilot sequences are great Hocus Pocus - classic disney Halloween favorite of mine Home Alone - classic, must see Love Actually - a romantic comedy for everyone Monty Python - only if you enjoy Britsh comedy, "I fart in your general direction!" Moulin Rouge - fan of musicals, Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, and love? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- a classic must see, Cowabunga, dude! The Matrix - the first one. forget the other sequels exist. They don't make sense. The Notebook - a great, huge chick flick. X-Men 3 - Hugh Jackman and his indestructible claws! The Princess Bride - a classic must see. It's supposed to be campy and poking fun. Princes, princesses, evil counts, giants and ROUSes (rodents of unusual size), can't get any better than that! haha

It was originally released in black and white and to be honest it really does not need color.
