Calcium build up is an alkali salt that you need to neutralize with an acid like vinegar. Don't use salt or baking soda, you'll only compound the problem. If you have a heavy build-up of calcium salts in your teapot, try chill-shocking it. Heat the dry teapot on the stove and then fill it with cold water from the sink. The sudden temperature change will break up the brittle deposits and you can pour them out. Obviously, do not do this with a glass pot.

Pour some hot distilled vinegar into your teapot, and leave for about two hours. Check if the build up has loosened, and wash out as normal.
You can do same thing with your kettle. Just boil the vinegar in the kettle, leave for an hour as so, and then wash out.

Vinegar will remove the lime deposits. Put a new stainless steel scrubby in your metal teapot. Boil your water for tea with the scrubby in the pot and you will not have a build up of lime.

Use amonia and water and let it sit in the teapot a day or 2 and see if that helps. I let my shower head soak in amonia water and it really does a good job on the calcium buildup on it.
