as with ANY Vehicle it depends on how well you maintain them. My parents have a 91 with 410,000 miles on it. The only thing they have had to replace is the rack and pinion and the alternator. Just keep up on regular maintenance. For the transmission make sure you come to a complete stop before you shift into drive from reverse or vise-versa, change the fluid every 60K miles and keep it filled. Transmission fluid is an oil. IT breaks down over time and loses its ability to function properly. Change the engine oil regularly, Make sure the spark plugs are in good shape. If a Seal goes bad and starts leaking, replace it. Replacing a seal is cheaper than replacing the engine because you let all the oil leak out. (a Note to some other repliers--Imports are NOT more reliable. Car and Driver just released a Top 10 most reliable list and Mercury (a FORD Product) Beat out Toyota, Nissan, AND Honda in reliablility the only Line to beat Mercury for reliability was Lexus and yes I know Lexus is an overpriced Toyota, Since I know you won't be happy hearing this you should also know that the data was gathered from 2003 to current and everytime a car went into a dealership for ANY type of repair that brand was logged and reliabilty was then figured on a percentage basis based on how many cars produced Vs. How many of those cars needed repair.

You'll know when you need a new engine or tranny cause they wont work anymore. To be called salvaged it'd have to need more fixed than worth fixing...like a new engine wouldn't be worth it if the car was a rust bucket or crappy looking why put $3000 into it when you could get something better for that much. 163,000 miles on a car nowadays is nothing really most 4 or 6 cylinder cars should get into the 200,000 range...it being an 89 taurus isn't going to help you though i'm surprised it hasn't craped out already. Keep changing the oil at 2500-3000 miles and service it..she may last you a while.

In most cases it depends on 2 things with ANY car.
1. Does it get the necessary maintainence it requires.
2. The way the "nut" behind the wheel drives.

I have a 1965 Oldsmobile with over 300,000. I have had to do a valve job, replace a clutch, replace mufflers, and replace starter. (The clutch was out when I got it about 180,000 miles ago.)
According to the shop mechanic of the original owner, a police department, it never had the heads off while they had it, nor did it have any more than routine maintainence and 1 set of brakes. (Verified by maintainence record on vehicle!!) Next owner burnt out the clutch and sold it CHEAP.

Our NEWEST vehicle is an '83 van!! ALL 8 regular vehicles run well, most are on their 2nd 100,000 miles.
Our 2 race cars run well also at the local track, and are on their 3rd year without a problem, OR an overhaul!! They are ALSO older models.

long island is often used as "new york" because of the fact some time past a properly customary persons hero (Johnny Appleseed) planted a single seed in the midst of the city. Then, in an odd warp in area-time, a boy named Jack planted a seed he believed to be magical in the comparable spot. In what remains seen a marveling organic and organic progression, the two seeds fused mutually on a molecular point. After an stunning rain, the seed hybrid grew into an apple 300ft tall and approximatively 330ft huge. The strangest component being the absence of a tree. it form of feels the apple grow to be thoroughly familiar, different than it grew right this moment from the floor with its very own roots like a beanstalk of a few style. for some years to come back, human beings could pass to the city and look up on the impossible fruit and think of "that is a significant apple". After a on an identical time as human beings began concerning the city itself as "new york". yet then, 1943 Oct eleventh, some thing unusual befell. because of the fact the city laid to kick back, the nighttime as quickly as back upon them, there grow to be an exquisite flash of pink gentle. The flash lasted for almost 4-5 seconds. no one is for particular what brought about the flash, yet as quickly because it grow to be over the apple had in simple terms disappeared. not in simple terms had it vanished, the floor it had grown from had closed as though it have been in no way there. some say the apple had grown so super it created some style of fruity supernova and collapsed in on itself in a black hollow. some say the aliens accountable for the dying of the dinosaurs got here back and destroyed the apple as properly. We might in no way comprehend precisely what befell that nighttime, yet one component is for particular. That grow to be a super-*** apple.

Our ford taurus never blew the tranny.. it was the engine and it was the seals on both models that went out. Otherwise it never gave us any trouble. But I would get it checked and cleaned out if they drop the pan and clean it out it should work for a long time.
