In my opinion, racism, like most negative things people engage in,comes from a feeling of a lack of power. People who feel powerless, whether it's from ignorance, low-self esteem, or poverty generally resort to one-upmanship. They have the need to feel powerful, as we all do, but racists go for bullying to get a fleeting feeling of power. Their true power lies in educating themselves, loving their brother as they love themself, and respect for humankind as a unit. You can see the awful results of racism everywhere you see fear and lack of freedom.
We are all just people on an incredible journey. Why not make the ride a nice one?

That depends on which end of the spectrum you belong to. Some can, but others can't. Racism today is very, very one-sided.

honestly i think it affects the close-minded more so than the victim. Confident open-minded people can shrug off rude comments and ignorant gestures...but the crude and intolerant see nothing but anger and unhappiness....thats my opinion.=0) racist people need to learn and experience life outside of their little box, until then, they should be ignored because their crap is useless....

The fear and dislike of others is genetic and can be best seen in studies of animal behavior. Until mankind overcomes this trait you can expect to constantly see bias against any aspect that people find dissimilar including race, skin color, religion, ethnic group, level of education, job titles, etc etc etc. I don't see it going away in the near future. People just hide it better.
