They either had the children or they induced miscarriages by trauma (I won't detail the methods). They may have also used rudimentary condoms made of sheep's gut. These do not stop diseases, however.
A dose of the pox (gonorrhea), syphilis or some other undesirable side effect of their job would result in debilitating health issues and an early death - there was no penicillin back then.
Not a desirable lifestyle.

Who says they didn't? I'm sure they knew plenty of ways to have an abortion too, and if you screw it up you CANNOT get pregnant. I think one of the main methods was counting days though, and maybe they didn't have sex during their fertile time. It isn't very effective though; I think the main method was abortion.
