If you're getting your ear pierced - yes it can hurt for a while. I had my upper ear pierced by a friend. I couldn't sleep on my left side for almost a month. But it healed up just fine, no troubles since. Getting my nose pierced was not quite as painful but I had that done at a body piercing salon. Just remember keep it kleen.

hurt as in pain? the cartlidge, no. the skin over top, yes.

hurt as in something other that pain? maybe. some people the cartlidge deforms (speaking on personal experience, i have a bump where i got my ear cartiledge pierced). some people get nasty infections that ultimately give you "califlower ear".

getting it pierced didnt hurt, the year and half after did. Mine didnt want to heal, and a big lump formed at the back of the piercing *i def kept stuff clean, just didnt wanna heal*
i couldnt even sleep on the ear for the whole time it was pierced, i ended up taking it out, and its a ton better.

good luck!
