Legally, if you can prove the date, then yes, your ideas are copywrited. If you are working on an open server (such as yahoo!) and have them host your website, then they can confirm the creation and changes of any material. Aside from that, at the bottom of your page put:

(c) (your name here) 2006

The copywrite laws are complicated and the "poor man's copywrite" (mailing something to yourself) is hardly legal and cannot be held up in court. But all original material is inherently copywrited. Showing what i told you earlier shows your intent to officially copywrite it. As long as you copywrite it before you "make reasonable measures to obtain financial benefit" from the work, then you are not required by law to obtain an official copywrite. By the way, a copywrite only costs $35. Now for the different avenues (movies, books, website, etc.) each require a seperate copywrite which is why it gets so expensive.

You need a great lawyer. You also need ways of implementing your idea. If your idea is in the domain of a large company with research and development departments, they can always claim that your idea is one they had been working on and you will need deep pockets to prove your case.

Write your idea on a sheet of paper. and mail it to yourself. put it in a lockbox unopened. It will have a post office date on it.

If you have clearly labeled it with your own name, it is yours by the law of intellectual property
