I'm no politcal master, but there has always seem to be two main parties. Would it be possible for a third party to emerge and stay permanent?

Yes it is POSSIBLE, but I feel it is highly unlikely. If you consider that throughout history, there has only been 2 main party's at a time..I think the reason for this is its POLITICS...The struggle for control. Political parties are composed of power hungry people. Control types. I think that eventually, inevitably whatever "3 rd" party becomes very popular with either EAT another party. Or be EATEN itself

Any thing is possible, it could happen, but there are only two chances slim and none. The money has gotten so big that the huge amounts that it would take to start a viable party is enormous, it would take a candidate like Lieberman that is popular, some well known and respected people, there are many, many things that would need to get done in order for viable third party to emerge. It would have to be a party that would appeal to the middle, neither left or right. My thought, it is worth the try.

That is a wonderful question! It would take a dynamic candidate, and such a pathetic current state of affairs between the two leading parties, a country full of serious issues not being solved, and scandals in both the major parties at once... Wait a minute, do you know where we can get the candidate?

Then, if this candidate was a student of history so he or she was qualified, and had been around so long she had been on the task force that impeached Nixon...Yes we have a candidate...

About that word permanent, There may not be any such thing...

Yes. It's a definitive possiblility. That's actually how the Republican and Democratic Parties started.

Look in your history books at the Federalists, the Know Nothings, and other political parties that dominated for a decade or more. The Federalist party actually lasted until the early 1900's!

After the Roosevelt Administration, the Democrats became the Republicans and vice versa.

Its possible, but lots of people would have to lose faith in the other two parties. One of the reasons is because both the democrats and republicans have A LOT more people than any other party making it nearly impossible for any third party to emerge.

I would love to think so. I really believe we need at least 2 additional parties. The extreme left and extreme right seem to be in control of the Republican and Democratic parties. That leaves the moderates on both sides of the political spectrum without adequate representation.

We moderates on both sides of the aisle need a party to represent our dreams for America.

Not unless we start voting them in without needing to see ads from the media. The two main parties control the money during the election which means they control the media with that. Most voters in America vote uninformed by following the media so until we actually start researching who is in office, the parties will not allow too many 3rd party candidates.

It would take some time for a third party to grow and become as powerful as the Democrats and Republicans, but if they have the right stuff they could.

Never! Remember that there are two types of people, Leaders and followers. And with that in mind, we tend to listen to the ones who advertise the most. And since the two major parties have millions of dollars to spend every election year, you can only assume WHO we will elect. I still remember voting for Ross P., and one of the parties threatened to kill his daughter at a church where she was supposed to get married. Remember, its about the control and money!
