White trash = Hicks = Rednecks? Are these synonyms or are there fine distinctions?

I live in the south so these are used quite often as synonyms. A redneck is considered as a person that works hard and lives rough. A hick is of the same nature but lives far back in the boondocks and lives a very simple life. White trash is considered a person that will not work, drug addicts, bad parents, etc....., I think you get the idea on that one. To answer your question, I believe it is in accordance if you are speaking as a whole they are synonyms, but if you are directing it toward a specific person it is a fine distinction.

They are not synonyms. White trash means a Caucasian of low morals/values and/or a poor work ethic while a hick is typically an unsophiticated (normally white) person from the back country, and a Redneck is typically white protestant who can live in and outside of an urban environment.

they can be synonymous but there are fine distinctions. first a redneck is usually southern and the guys from blue collar TV tell it best. a hick is a certain kind of redneck or white trash and white trash is a widely used word for people who usually live in trailer parks but can certainly and sometimes more often be rich.

I would say rednecks and hicks are synonyms. But white trash is the white version of ghetto. Which does not entirely fit in with the other two words.

There are big distinctions. I don't mind being called a 'hick' because I live in a very rural community and I am proud of that fact. I'm also proud to be a 'redneck' who would risk my life to protect that community and this great nation. However, call me white trash and we will rumble as that is the white version of the n word. I'm sure there is some distinction but no one wants to study any of them to find out. Here's a guess:
Rednecks are uncouth because they're laborers who work in the field and have no time for getting sophisticated;
Hicks are inhabitants of godforsaken villages who have so little to do with civilization they can't really be civilized, and are generally not hard working people;
White trash are junkies and drunks in trailer parks; generally a useless and lazy bunch.
So if you want to socialize with any of them, rednecks could be the only honest and decent people to hang around with :-)

Hicks are in small towns and usually date within the family.
Rednecks are the upperscale form of a hick usually found in bigger cities and have higher income.
White trash are found in the suburbs and usually sell drugs are find other ways to cheat and get by.
