I think fear and ignorance and insecurity make people prejudiced. Babies are not born prejudiced they learn it from someone. It could be their parents, friends, peers just about anyone. It is said that there is so much prejudice in the world because inside we are all the same and just want love and acceptance from others. Unfortunately we live in an imperfect world and there is always those who think they are superior to others. Think about it this way those that feel the need to put others down mostly likely are doing it because they have low self esteem and are trying to make themselves feel more important.

Some people are prejudiced because they are frightened of feelings in themselves that they associate with the group they're bigoted against. For example some men hate gays because they feel insecure about their own sexuality or their own masculinity.

Some people are prejudiced because it makes them feel more of a group that shares that prejudice.

Some people are prejudiced because that's what they've been taught, and they haven't thought it through for themselves.

Some people are prejudiced because they've had a bad experience with one person from a group, and they generalise it to everyone else in that group.

Often it's a combination.

It's the human fear of the unknown, and everything else you said are the things that make people prejudice. The people who had a horrible experience are just afraid, the ignorant people are careless about everything but themselves, the parents teaching their children prejudice is a lesson that was taught to them when they were children (with a few exceptions of that rule).

Their parents in the beginning of their lives. Then later their peers, if they are ignorant, will persuade them to be prejudice.
Prejudice is not a personal derivative, it is a social derived attitude.

I am prejudice toward Black people. I constantly guard against discriminating against them. However, the seed was planted deep in my soul.

However, my children are not prejudice. Why? I raised my children to pre-judge no one. I didn't tell them that it was a nice attitude, I told them that it was smart to be un-biased and open minded, and therefore able to make decisions based on the facts instead of based on rumors and inuendoes.

Most of the time, it has to deal with the environment in which one is raised in and the fact that they've been taught ignorance and how to hate. It's extremely pitiful and sad... but fortunately, there are people like us here. Open-mindedness and iconoclasm rock! So do hot gay guys... *drools*

I have to agree; fear. Things only bother you when you have unresolved issues within yourself, otherwise, you wouldn't bother to notice. And I guess parental inflence and how you were raised would have some sort of influence, but mostly it the fear of failing to acknowledge what is within yourself. Generally, people tend to be afraid of things that are unfamiliar to them, and so that makes it bad. And sometimes, it's even jealousy.

fear, ignorance, being taught by ignorant parents to hate. if you're brought up by bigots and taught it's OK to hate people that are different, you grow up thinking it's OK to hate. people often fear anyone/anything that is different. if you fail to educate yourself about things you don't understand...don't try to get to know people that are different, then you usually end up a bigot.

Prejudice is a convenience, like microwavable pop-corn.

Prejudice is for lazy people who are content assuming, and believing in, lies. Why? You can't hate someone that you see as an individual.

Fear of people or things outside their range of knowledge. They are afraid of how these people or ideas will affect their lives. And yes, I believe your parents can teach you to be afraid if they are not open to people and ideas that are different from them.
