I have had my two turtles going on 9 years now. I wanted to know because I'm dying to know, how the heck do I know what age they are? Or are they like human years?

Thanks!

The age of a box turtle can be approximated by counting the rings on the scutes (plates) of the turtle's carapace (top of the shell).Box turtles commonly live to be 30 years old and can probably live much longer than that

The tree ring idea is faulty! turtles develop thr rings at distinct prices, so a turtle will be 5 years previous with a unmarried ring, or 10. It relies upon on your turtles relative length. no count number no matter if it really is a boxie, if the shell is compleatly tender, it really is a minimum of 30 years previous, If there are very ridged rings, it really is an truly youthful turtle.

The tree ring theory is WRONG! turtles grow thr rings at different rates, so a turtle can be 5 years old with a single ring, or 10. It depends on your turtles relative size. If it is a boxie, if the shell is compleatly smooth, it is at least 30 years old, If there are very ridged rings, it is a very young turtle.

If they are Red-ear sliders or a related species, they can live to about 20-30 years. The only way to know the age for SURE is to see them be born.

You can make a good guess by counting the rings on the belly scales. They are not really accurate, but it is close enough to satisfy curiosity.

Simply cut it in half and count the rings around it's spine.
