maybe you bought one of those childproof ones, just rip out the child proof thing and use it like a regular lighter.

I think it's difficult to use a lighter. Then again, while I have not been diagnosed with pyrophobia by a qualified professional, I am quite nervous around fire. 8-o (First-grade classroom burned when some idiots were drag racing late one night and one idiot spun out of control and crashed into the room. Transferred to another school for 2nd through 6th grade [district changed boundary lines when another school was built]. Principal at new school was nervous about noise and also scheduled random fire drills for no reason. One such drill turned out to be real [bathroom fire]. Volunteered at a hospital; happened to show up on the day the hospital laundry caught fire. I was at the elevator when I first became aware of the fire (alarm went off; I looked toward the back door and there was smoke between me and the back door). I have no idea how I got out of there. I do know it involved a set of stairs.

Try using both thumbs. Wedge a thumb nail into the little ridgey part on both sides and pull away from the bit the flame comes out of. You'll feel like an idiot, but it should work (at least it does for me--I also have trouble, and I don't smoke, either).

I think you have a lighter with a defective wick, shouldn't be that difficult. Why not just try another lighter, but this time try it before you buy it.

Yep!
That is why I use matches. Much easier on the thumb, AND quicker.
