My good, good friend cuts herself. She has cut herself for 3 or 4 years, she is only 14 and i don't know what to do. She has multiple scars on her arms and she carved her initials in her ankle, and she cut her stomach once. I'm afraid she'll cut to deep, what do I do? How do I make her quit?

Speaking from personal experience as I did the same things to myself when I was her age....she really needs to sit down and talk with a counselor. Is she experiencing issues at home with her parents? Any domestic abuse in the home that you know of?

If the problem has stemmed due to issues within the home environment I would recommend you tell your friend to seek help from school, either a counselor or even the school nurse. The nurse would know of local health departments that could assist your friend while providing her with the comfort of not engaging more drama from the homefront.

I'm not suggesting you avoid telling her folks, but again from personal experience unfortunately, I can answer this one honestly and upfront. Not all parents are prepared to deal with the stress and reality that their actions within the family unit are inflicting high volume stress reactors in their children. Instead of understanding, they may lash out and "punish" her or belittle her problems because they themselves have issues they don't know how to deal with.

I hope your friend understands that hurting herself won't make her problems or frustrations go away but talking with an adult in a safe, controlled environment may help her become more comfortable and know that there are people out there whom can help her. At least emotionally she can heal her scars, she'll have to remember the physical ones will be there for life and when she gets older she may not want those as a reminder to what she went through as a teenager.

Hope this helps hon!

Tell her parents or if your scared to go to them directly tell a teach at school and then they can talk to her parents with you. Just continue being her friend why she gets the help she needs too.

She won't kill herself by cutting. Tell her parents, she is calling out for attention.
