Fender Stratocaster or entry level Fender is good. You can get a lot of different tones out of a Strat: smooth, deep tones for blues or jazz, or mid tones for metal or pop, or high tones if you like to "shred". This is possible because of the configurations available from the three pickups. Plus, the whammy bar allows you another means to express yourself.

Anyone who knows anything will tell you that the amplifier that you play the guitar through is equally if not more important than the guitar for sound. However, the guitar itself affects how you play. The action of the guitar, the width of the arm etc are important factors that are a personal choice of the guitarist. A real guitar expert can always custon any guitar to suit his or her style, but a beginner is not qualified to do this. The best way to determine which guitar you is best for you is to go to your nearest music store and try out a whole bunch of them. It's fun to play on a whole bunchof guitars too. Play them on an amp that is similar to the one you own so you can get an idea of the sound.
By the way, I own 5 guitars and not one of them is a Fender. I always find something different that I have to have when I go and try out a whole bunch of guitars at the music store. I own an Ibanez Roadstar (this is a bit of a Fender rip off), a Godin Artisan (handmade in Montreal), a Norman 12 string acoustic guitar, an Aria acoustic guitar and a handmade classical guitar.

Whoa... not so fast. Fenders can be great, but what you should get should be determined by the size of your hands. Do you have small hands? You might want a shorter "scale length" than the stock Fenders. Gibsons aren't cheap, but they have a shorter "scale length" so they might be more comfortable to play. Regardless, here's what you should do - take a guitar playing buddy that has a LOT of experience with guitars with you when you go guitar shopping. Look for a good quality USED instrument, something in good condition with "clean" electronics, that plays well and feels right in your hands. Learn about pickups, and check out web guides to "how to buy an electric guitar", and good luck!

GET A FENDER! seriously mate, those are really good in sound/projection, etc. A real guitarist would start on the Fender and probably move up from there.
