I had a breast reduction awhile ago and was told by the DR that it may be a possibility that I wouldn't be able to nurse because of some possible damage to the milk ducts resulting from the operation. I was wondering if anyone else had 1 and if so, did your breast leak colostrum in your pregnancy (I am 6 months and havent noticed any leaking yet) and were you able to nurse your baby successfully?

If they removed the nipple during your surgery you "may" be able to breast feed, but more likely than not, you will have to supplement as well. When they cut through the nipple, it disrupts the flow of the milk. Not to mention that they remove some of the breast tissue, and that includes ducts and glands necessary for breast feeding. My advice to you would be to contact your area La Lache League, or contact an area OB department of a hospital and ask if they have "Certified Lactation Specialists" on staff. They can give you information on how to optimize your milk production.
Good luck - and remember that ANY breast milk you can give your baby is a precious gift no one else can give.

My friend had one done, and only had minor problems, she didnt make as much milk as the doc would mave liked, so she breast fed and formula fed. I think it is prety rare to have so much damage that you would be affected by it in a major way when it comes to breast feeding, but there is always risk with any procedure. Good luck, I hope you feed well. Congrats!

I didn't have a reduction but I didn't leak at all during my pregnancy and I had tonnes of milk. So that isn't really a sign.

There is a group for breastfeeding after reduction:

I read,... that it is harder for a woman with implants to breastfeed than it is for a woman who has had a reduction. I don't know how this helps you... but maybe it will give you a little more confidence! I'm sure that if you have enough patience it will work!!

Good Luck and God Bless
