The last 50 years that would have to be Clinton. He came in and did the hard work. Balanced the budget which never would have been done by a republican president. I mean look what happened immediatly after Clinton we got Bush and now we are in a bigger hole financially then we were before Clinton took office. Yeah its true he lied about sexual relations with Monica, but how many presidents didnt lie about getting a little something in the oval office...I am sure that Clinton wasnt the first to get screwed in the oval office and he definitly wont be the last.

Eisenhower, it was a time of relative peace and prosperity for everybody. He was responsible for the interstate highway system. It was almost boring, when the headline and picture on the front page was "Ike" playing golf with Bob Hope, that was the day's big news. You know things are going good. He wasn't running around the world all the time defending his policy's like the all time worst. I would say baring Clinton's little problem that he would be a sound second, he ran the country in a time of relative peace and huge prosperity. Left the country in good shape and the budget in good shape. His little problem should not enter into the history of the man.

Dwight Eisenhower. A lot of people weren't alive during his presidency so they won't think of him. Here is one good reason he was the best president in 50 years (there are many others)...Because you don't hear much about him. He interpreted the job of the presidency as it should be, as a custodianship.

Jimmy Carter -- the middle east was closest to peace during the Oslo talks, he tried to reduce the dependance on oil, he was a true christian and continues his service today with his work for habitat for humanity.
Many might regard Carter a failure -- like the stone the builders rejected.

hmmmmm good question... the best would be one of these three depending on your perspective
Eisenhower- he started the initiative for highways which have greatly benefited domestic trade.
Johnson- Great Society increased socialist policies, Really pushed the civil rights movement
Reagan- for killing all but a few of the great society policies, really the first step away from socialism since FDR's new deal in the 30's

GIve me a few years break and I'd sayTruman. He did what he had to do despite what anyone thought about it. But if you're a strict constructionist I'd say Reagan, because he did what he had to do despite what anyone thought about it.
