1. Recognize what you want to change in your dialogue.
2. Practice replacing that thought with thoughts you would rather have.
3. Repeat until it becomes automatic.

Well, I think it is possible to do this, but that it does take a lot of practice. The first step is to really learn what your internal dialogue is. That could be done by writing down all of your disturbing or overly critical thoughts when you are down. You can then see the distortions in them and you can write positive (but realistic) rebuttals to them. It helps to do this on paper, I find, especially at first.

If it is very hard to do this, or someone feels down, then seeing a doctor or therapist can also be a positive step. A book that helped me with this was Feeling Good by David Burns which is available in most major bookstores. I hope this is helpful and I wish you all the best!

that can be something that is so difficult that a person may not do it with out help from others and from medications.
the instant i saw this question i assumed you ment how can you change from a negative self talk to positve self talk . i see others have done the same . that is interesting.
certainly first recording what your self talk is in the case of negative is important. once that is done i think a non emontial rational approch should be attempted. for instance if your saying your self i am no good . write that down then work from the present to the past and back finding all the examples of cases where you were of use and you would be accepting that in that one moment or period you were of use and good.
another way or another thing to do at the same time as the above is to practise thought stopping. each time a negative or unwanted thought comes along just refuse it use different meathods until you find the ones that work best for you.
could be music could be a memory of a happy positve time could be an effort to think only of the work your doing .
still for some this may not be enough for a person with depression another person a pyscologist or social worker or
a psyciatrist may be needed.
in addtion to all of that for some a mediations are needed.
when ever a person gets to the point of using medication for the treatment of the negative self talk they should use the meds only when in concert with the other meathods i mentioned meds alone should never be the only responce
changing things in your life can also work very well you might be in a situation that is best left behind. you might have to force yourself to do things that are contradicting the self talk .
if the self talk is negative and is pretty much telling you not to do things you once found fun you would then force yourself to do that thing again like swimming or playing an insturment not really any set rule on what it is except that it should not be something like the use of street drugs or alcholhal .
this i think is the way to change stop or reduce the negative self talk . sorry but changing positve self talk is not my thing but i think if its an over inflated ego then much the same things would be done as were done with negative self talk .
oh here is some out loud talk i am angry that the spell checker will not work for me today. sorry i am a poor speller.

what an odd question, so straight forward, "change your internal dialogue"is usually the answer to a problem, not the question itself.
the answer would then seem as simple as the "question" : think differently. If you want to have better self esteem- think more positively for example.

i meditate on postive goals or positive visualizations...guided meditations are a good way to do this if you are new to this, i use guided meditation cd's every night before i go to sleep, and that helps me set the stage for a positive internal dialogue, especially if the cd's have some degree of hypnotherapy to them, containing positive messages for your subconscious...
