Most recently, this has been obvious with Sandi Thom of 'I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair' fame.
You wouldnt know she has a very strong scottish accent until you hear her speak- it definately is not detectable in her songs.

I'm not sure why this phenomenon occurs. English is my native language, but I took Spanish in college. My teacher said she could tell we weren't native speakers when we were talking, but when we would do a class exercise and sing a song the accents disappeared. So it's a phenomenon which crosses language barriers. Chalk one up for the power of music!

that's because everyone sings in an american accent. Unless they're english rock/metal/grunge/urban if it's popular culture then the songs are all sung in the same popular accent plus can you imagine james blunt singing you're beautiful in an english accent?!!!?? That would be highly cringeworthy - apart from the fkn high bit!

1) most music is severely altered by computers.
2) Accents require extra muscles to be used. I guess the complexity of singing a song requires to loosen these muscles.

slew.....what about the bands from the "British Invasion"? Music back then wasn't so computerized, and when you hear Mick singing you can't tell he has a British accent.

I know one accent you can tell though...the southern American. I'm from the south and when I was in middle school I was in choir (don't know why, I can't sing worth crap...) and our choir teacher was from up North. She couldn't help but laugh sometimes because we sounded so country when we sang.

I don't know though, its a good question.

Remember Gomer Pyle from Andy Griffith in Mayberry?
Did you ever hear him sing-his voice was from another planet from his speaking voice/accent

Yeah . It sucks. As for the music video, they were of direction using the stereotype that purely Asians do nails ,no matter if the lady threw a e book at her. I hate stereotypes. It feeds into racism.

I dunno, but I have noticed it too, and then sometimes people without accents can sound like they have one.
