If you can afford it then go for it. Buy an inexpensive one though. Something such as an e-Machine. Stay away from the mail order Dells ... too many problems for a neophyte. Also, remember she will need some basic software to start with.

I would also suggest any of the self-help books by Que publishing. They are great for us old fogeys.

If you really want her to become interested in a computer then please do not consider a laptop. They are far too much trouble for a new user.

I'm a Mom and as nice as that gift would be my first thought as a Mom would be "Why did you spend so much money? You need to save your money and be ready for life once you graduate"
