You have to be dilated at least 9 or 10 cm before you're able to give birth. If you're only 4 cm, there's no way that baby is going to be able to be delivered.

It's normal for a woman to be dialated as much as you are before going into actual labor! Don't be alarmed that you're already dialated and not able to have the baby yet! Just remember that you're just about half way there! Once your water breaks or you go into active labor then you will wait until you are 10 cm dialated before you have the baby! If you end up going past your due date then they may break your water in the hospital to make you go into active labor.

I was 4cm dilated for a week or more and I went into labor naturally. They will not make you just because you are dilated. My doctor said some women can walk around like that for a month or more. You just never know. Its up to your doctor though whether or not they would induce your labor. But unless there is a medical reason they probably wont.

I am 37wks3days and I am dilated to 5 cm. The doctor made me stop working because she wants me to go another week before having the baby (She thinks me standing at work will encourage labor). If I do not have the baby by Wednesday the 6th, she will induce me on the 7th.

You're supposed to be 10cms before you can have the baby. Are you asking how long they will wait before they will give you drugs to help progress the dilation to ten? I would assume at least until you are 38 weeks which is what classifies a pregnancy as officially full-term. But different doctors have different ways of doing things. Questions like that are best asked at your doctor's appointment.

I was at 4cm for 2 months. Finally my water broke. They should set you to be induced soon. Walk walk walk. Get the baby to drop.

As long as your water has not broken, your cervix is not showing signs of irregular swelling, and other physical things the doctor will look at, you can go the whole 40 weeks.
