Pushing is okay, but really hard is not. It could probably strain your stomach muscles and it might have bad effects on the baby as well.
Are you sure you aren't having a fecal impaction? If you're having a hard time getting it out, you might want to do something to help it along for fear of hurting the baby or yourself.

I was in your same situation last year at this time, pregnant with my first and a TOTAL worry wart about the baby. I suffered from constipation during the pregnancy and took a stool softener, Dulcolax, for the first time ever. It sure did help, but I do not think you can hurt the baby by pushing too hard. I would not take anything OTC unless absolutely necessary, even if my doctor said it was safe (which the Dulcolax is), but I was in so much discomfort, I finally broke down and took the Dulcolax because I couldn't stand the hard pushing, often with no results! Good luck!

Pushing will not hurt your baby nor will it bring on Braxton Hicks Contractions. I would not recommend pushing to hard cause pushing puts pressure on your intestins and makes the veins contract. Pushing really hard can cause you to tear the very thin walls of your rectum and cause bleeding. Pushing and tearing is not good nor is it safe if you tear you have to go to the hospital because your rectum is not a sterile area your pee is sterile but not the things that come out of your rectum so I recommend you taking a warm shower stand with your head under the shower and let the water run down your back it helps loosen things up believe me it helped me I to am pregnant and due in July of 07 and I am going through it to. I hope everything goes well for you and turns out to be better.
Take care!
Soon to be a mom!

I had that problem when I first got pregnant and it didnt hurt anything> The reason you could be constipated is b/c of your prenatals. The best thing you can do is take more fiber, not a laxitive unless approved by your obgyn Hope this helps!

Sounds like you're getting too much iron in your prenatal vitamins. You may want to ask your Dr if you can have a lower dosage vitamin. Drink lots of water and stay away from soda, as it also "helps" in slow movement. Eat more fiber and exercises regularly.
