A great place to start is Lissa Explains it All (lissaexplains.com) It says it's for kids but it's a great place to start and learn the basics. you can build a pretty good website using the things on her site if you're creative.

Another good idea once you've gotten started building your own sites is to find someone to host you, try pick-me.net to find someone who owns a domain to host you, that way you don't have to deal with ads, and you have a lot more flexibility and freedom (and it's free).

You can use html on Geocities. You just bypass their stuff and put in your own. You'll have to learn html.

I would try a wsiwig editor trial version like dreamweaver or the one by microsoft. If you like it pirate a copy or buy an old version off ebay.

you could just sign up for webhosting at any major web hosting provider and use their templates. Most, if not all will provide you with templates to use so all you do is fill in the required info (your content) and upload.

you could use Nvu, www.nvu.com

it's great and free so you don't have to download illegal copies of any software or worry about trials ending. Try it and you might like it.
