Bird food is NOT an ideal diet, and although dog food works fairly well, it is not perfect either.
The best rat food I've found is Harland Teklad #8604. This has been voted as the BEST rat diet by the Rat & Mouse Club of America. It's got everything your rats need, and you can order it online fairly cheaply. I wouldn't dream of using anything less.
I order all my rat food from here:

or
http://www.theratshop.com/shop.php?cat=3
Again, unless you have pregnant, nursing, or "special needs" rats, #8604 is what you'll want to get. You can order any amount, in pounds, that you want. I order 5 pounds at a time, and freeze half. For two rats, it lasts MONTHS!

We used to breed rats and they will do fine on dog food. Rat food is always the best, but if you can't get it, dog food will work temporarily.
Just make sure you get a dog food with between 16 and 18 percent protein.
Bird food will not provide them with enough fat or protein. You can also get Lab block rat food from a feed store for around $15 -$20 a bag. I don't know how many rats you have, but the bags are huge and will last a while.. unless you have a couple hundred rats. You could also check with a feed store and see if they have any alternatives to the real expensive brands.
Hope that helps.

I use the Shunamite diet(Suebee diet in the USA). I have put both links below. You can use a variety of different foods and my rats have been a lot healthier because of it. I use reggie rat, dog kibble, a few different cereals and pasta. I make up a huge box of it and it will last my 12 about 2 months. It may cost a little bit more(althoug the pasta and cereal are the economy versions as they have less salt and sugar), but I save a fortune in vet bills. It might be worth thinking about as you can use rabbit food instead of rat food which is usually easier to get hold of.
Dog food is fine as temporary measure or as part of a mix as long as the protein isnt too high. Cat food is high in protein and should only be given to nursing, baby or ill rats.

Rats need a specific diet with i think 16% protein. Rat food is made for them so bird food and dog food isn't made for them. Try to get good rat food. Only once in a while I get hamster food.
They should also get fresh veggies and fruits. And remember- males cannot have oranges.

Seriously you can feed them bird food, its generally cheeper and made up of the same things, my rats actually prefered it becuse I got them the kind with peanuts in them and they loved it. Also you can feed them some of your own food (not all the time though!) like give them little peices of fruit, or uncooked spaggettii, bread, things like that.
