I am Mexican and we have a very rich cultural heritage. One example of this is how we celebrate Christmas. Starting the 16th of December, we have what we call “posadas” where everyone gets together to commemorate Joseph and Mary’s passage towards Bethlehem. These celebrations continue until the 24th. Before the onset of each celebration, guests gather together with candles at hand and the image of Joseph, Mary and the donkey. At the door of the hostess, they sing a well known song asking for “posada” shelter. The people inside deny shelter at first. The people outside explain that this is Joseph and Mary and that she is carrying our savior. This singing continues back and forth until the doors are thrown opened and everyone comes in, carrying Joseph and Mary’s image and singing happily. Fireworks, whistles and lights help to create a festive event. The celebration begins and the typical and colorful piñata is brought out. People of all ages hit the piñata (made from clay pots and colored paper). Once broken, people hurriedly try to catch as much candy, sugar canes and fruit which comes pouring down from the piñata. Small baskets with candy are given to everyone in case someone was not able to get candy. The delicious food follows. Typical dishes include “atole” (drink) “tamales” (main food) and “buñuelos” (dessert), all made from corn flour. Throughout this celebration, you can here music, laughter and singing. Everyone is in wonderful festive mood. The next day someone else invites you to their posada and the celebration continues until the 24th. On the 24th, only the family gets together to celebrate. Presents are given on the 6th of January, the day when Three Wise Men came to bring presents to the baby Jesus. Children leave out their shoes, and presents are put into these. This is a wonderful tradition, enjoyed by all.

I'm Canadian, and an interesting thing about my culture is that there's a strong acceptance of other cultural backgrounds present within Canada.

For a few days, once a year in my city there is a festival called "Mosaic" where pavillions are set up all around the city, and each pavillion offers food and displays elements from a different cultural background; dancing, crafts, etc. One would be devoted to the Chinese community with-in our city, another to the German culture, another to the Ukrainian contingent, etc...

This is always one of the best attended festivals in my city.

I'm another Canadian :-)

Our culture is open to learning about other cultures and blending in with everyone. I find the mind set interesting at the moment because many Canadians are now recognizing that they are a force to be recokened with and we are not quite as quiet as we use to be; but just as friendly. Our culture is very protective of nature and animals.........however, our government needs a good kick that way!

Most Canadians love to travel within our own countries and others. We love learning and observing everything around us.

Slowly we are turning into teachers.................It will be interesting to see what we share with the world don't you think?

though i'm only part greek and we don't follow many traditions i found something out which is kinda different that i thought was totally normal!

Whenever people come to our house we always have food available for them to eat. While on a normal day we may have 2 meals in a day when guests arrive we have 4. we always make them a cooked breakfast and there are always plates in the kitchen with food for them to help themselves to. I've been told this is a very Greek trait, and i love it!
