I just bought a cufflink and it comes with a long flat piece of metal, what does this do?

Most cufflinks that I've seen have a piece in the middle that flips up to hold it in place after you pass it through the hole. If the buton hole is ___ this way then the piece in the cufflink will go across the hole hold it in place.
