It feels like I am pushing against a brick when I try to accelerate in my car. It feels this way in drive and neutral (auto transmission) so I don't think it's the tranny.

Most likely either your throttle cable is corroded and sticking or your throttle plate is sticking. Both are very common on GM vehicles not to say it is limited to just a GM problem. There are actually a few vehicles that have a recall for this problem. Shouldnt be to expensive to repair hopefully though so there is some good news. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

sounds like the kickdown assembly is froze up common on a neon. if this is what kind of car you drive check where your throttle cable hooks to trans. have some one push on gas to see if it is trying to move shifter also. if it is soak it with penetrating oil and work it back and forth repeat as many times as it takes

Are you driving a fuel injection engine or a carburetted one? If it is the latter, your carburettor probably needs overhauling (not expensive) or adjustment, as it might be restricting the working of the fuel pump.

If you're driving a fuel injected engine, then have your fuel pump checked.
