I really hate the rule where you get dotted down 1/4 for a wrong answer and you lose nothing if you leave an answer blank. How can i put this rule to my advanatge???

Dont' guess unless you can eliminate 2 or more answers. That helps to minimize the wrong answer penalty.

The SAT is mainly a logic test (or "Reasoning Test" as the testmakers call it). You can often use logic to reason your way through questions that initially seem very confusing.

The #1 strategy for the verbal sections is to work on your vocabulary. Get a SAT prep book from the bookstore or library and make flashcards of the SAT vocab words. Learn a large chunk of words each day (20-30, depending on how long you have before the exam).

For the math section, you can use strategies like working backwards from the answers and plugging in numbers for variables. Also many of the geometry problems can be broken into simpler sub-problems that employ the equations given at the beginning of the test section.

I'd strongly recommend a test prep book from a reputable company like Kaplan or Princeton Review. If nothing else, just taking several practice tests helps you learn the different types of questions, which helps you feel more confident on exam day.
