I want a straightforwad beginner's cosmology book. I want in particular to read about the big bang, but in a non-jargony way. (I was disappointed with both of Stephen Hawking's books because I want more explanation and a little more in-depth than that.)

I believe one of the very best, told at an intelligent high school student's level is "Universe" by Isaac Asimov. It is a little out of date now, but not much. After you read this, then read "The Whole Shebang" by Timothy Ferris. John Gribben has some good books as well, but not as good as Ferris in my opinion.

Try Stephen Wineberg's "The First Three Minutes".
