I was told the noise in my car was coming from the transaxle. i don't want to buy a new car, but i was told fixing the transaxle may be worth more than the car is worth. my car is ten years old. how long can it last?

Uh... what car is it? Year/model/manual/automatic etc. etc... Once determined, I'd suggest educating yourself about the typical pitfalls of the transaxle in your car in an appropriate online forum (by automobile model or transmission model) then make the decision. All you will receive is conjecture and random, inaccurate or uneducated answers with the question you posed. edit: BTW a transaxle is NOT a CV shaft as others have already started to answer...

from the price you are talking about i assume you mean the transmission/rear end. yes, transaxle. not to be confused with the axles themselves. axles themselves are cheap enough to fix and really pretty easy. to tell if one is bad you need to turn sharp both directions and listen for clicking or even banging. as for the transaxle as long as it is full of oil, there is not to much to worry about thereif its manual. automatic is a whole new ball game. get another opinion. 96 is not too old to put money into i think.

why don't you just go to the junk yard, get a new transaxle and put it in? it's not really all that hard. you could do both sides in about an hour.

If the trans axel is bad, you can get one from auto-zone for about 60-100 bucks. The axel will last untill it it comes apart.
