Sean Connery was at the gymn pushing weights when he was spotted by a film director and asked if he wanted a film part which was how he started. I have done some work as a film extra- £50 for up to 12 hours work. You may be spotted whilst doing that. I think that was how Ricky Tomlinson made it(The Royle Family)

The 'Movie Industry' is a well known pub in my area, which is the village of Wozzle in Cornwall UK. You can not only walk in, but you can walk straight past the khazi and walk out should you so wish.

You just have to make ONE good movie, or act in just ONE good movie o write ONE great script. Examples: Director ALFONSO CUARON (last harry potter) made ONE good movie called "Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN" nominated for the Golden Globes, and that was it. Another VERY GOOD EXAMPLE is M.Night Shyamalan. I don't have anything against him and although I love Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson, and Paul Giamatti, M.Night did ONLY ONE GOOD MOVIE: 6TH SENSE. After that he managed to get budget to make a new movie every year. One worst than the other. You just have to make ONE GOOD MOVIE, and that's it. And of course the movie doesn't exactly have to be great. You just have to find the way to make it to a known festival such as SUNDANCE, THE OSCARS ORTHE GOLDEN GLOBES.
Actors who made it to hollywood with only ONE GOOD MOVIE: Ewan Mc Gregor (Trainspotting) Cillian Murphy (28 days later). One last thing: Notice that this ONE GOOD MOVIE could o could not be the first movie you ever made (not including shorts) Quentin Tarantino's First Movie was Reservoir Dogs.

I must depend on what you've got to offer.
Looks,height,face,speech,accent,body shape.
I guess a lot of it is luck,and who the director / producer is,and whether you happen to fall into one of the above categories.
Most actors/ actresses start of by being `extras`.There are a lot of firms who pay good money for doing this.
If you read through the job sections,you can often find them being advertised for films or t.v.
