I say everyone has a right to their own opinions. I would say a homophobe is someone who asks questions like "should we tag gays to make sure they don't come within 100m of children?". These are people who usually turn out to be racist too. Basically: uneducated, small minded, self absorbed, hateful people who have nothing better to do than torment those 'different' to them.

What is your definition?

People who actively pursue an agenda against the Gay Community at large.
JUST FOR THEIR INFORMATION.........
If we want to know about your religion, we will ask.
If we want your opinion about sex, or sexual practices, we will ask.
If we need information about sexually transmitted diseases, we will ask someone who knows what they are talking about that doesn't have a hateful attitude or negative agenda toward homosexuals.

Sometimes they are not so evil and eventhough they say really bad things it only takes one gay person to talk to them and in an hour they become totaly different people. I have so many friends that used to make terrible remarks about homosexuality and after I came out and explained some things to them they completely changed their point of views. The real problem is that currently bashing gays is not shocking and not stopped. And if in addition to that people have ignorance and lack of information about homosexuality, they can sound pretty nasty. Also, what we should be afraid of is the educated ones who still keep their agentas, and lead the uneducated ones towards their views using religion and family values in vain.
A guy that just happened not to meet a gay person or not being able to see anything related to homosexuality is no threat. A psychologist coming out and saying that we are perverts is a problem.

A homophobe is a closeminded person who relies on weak arguments to portray gay people as bad. Look at the answer above mine (georgeewert) for an example.

'Homophobe' as it is currently used, is a b ull s h it word. It literally means 'a person who is afraid of homosexuals', and that is not how it is used.

Heterosexist is much more apt.

And I know many heterosexists who aren't now and have never been racist.

the term "homophobe" might not be totally appropriate, as it implies someone is afraid of homosexuals. however, I think the hatred bigots have towards us starts with fear. fear of something they don't understand. we're different. you don't understand why. BUT, do you try to learn? do you try to get to know us? do you try to understand what makes us different? those who refuse to educate themselves and get to know us, let that "fear" fester and turn into hatred. and hatred often turns into juvenile name-calling and harassment. and then that can even turn into violence. fear can be a terrible thing! those who do try to understand, to learn, to educate themselves, to get to know us....tend to become our allies and friends.
